There are many conditions that cause pain in the lower right abdomen. Some of these causes are quite common. However, some can me quite serious and can require you to seek medical attention immediately.

First, let’s start by examining the Abdomen

The Abdomen is the part of the body containing the digestive organs, commonly referred to as the belly.  It is the space between the chest, (thorax) and the pelvis.

The abdomen as stated above contains all of your digestive organs. These include the stomach, both large and small intestines, gallbladder, liver and pancreas. Also, included are the spleen and kidneys. All of these digestive organs are loosely held together by a connective tissue, (mesentery). This allows them to move and slide against each as you move.

Some of the less serious causes of lower right abdominal pain:

Intestinal Gas – Intestinal Gas is mostly the byproduct of the digestive system. An excessive amount of can cause pain in the lower right abdomen. This is caused by excessive gas accumulating in the abdomen. This causes a bloating feeling, discomfort and even pain in the lower right abdomen.

Indigestion – You can also experience pain and discomfort in the lower right abdomen due to indigestion. Indigestion it can be combined with heartburn and flatulence. This can be easily treated by readily available medicines. However, if this condition persists, you should seek medical attention.

Menstrual Cramps – Many women experience pain in the lower right abdomen before and during the menstrual cycle. It can be a consistent pain. It is often combined with nausea, headaches and pain in the lower back and legs.

Serious causes of Right Abdominal Pain

Some lower right abdominal pain can be the warning sign(s) of a serious medical condition and requires the need for immediate medical attention.

Appendicitis: This is the most frequent cause of pain in the lower right abdomen. The appendix is a tubular organ which is attached to the lower intestine.

Kidney Stones: Kidney Stones are developed due to a decrease in urine volume which allows stone forming substances  to accumulate.

This causes lower right abdominal pain, back pain and a burning sensation during urination. Also, can be accompanied by fever and blood in the urine. If you have any of these symptoms you should seek immediate medical attention. Kidney Stones can be life threatening if left untreated.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease: This is something that greatly affects the entire digestive tract. It can be caused by Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. They both inflammation and are the leading causes of inflammatory bowel disease.

Hernia: A Hernia is when an organ passed thru a week area surrounding the organ. Most occur in the abdomen.

Hernias can cause pain in the lower right abdomen. You may feel a lump in the area of the pain. This pain can worsen when you lift a heavy object, cough or sneeze.

Major complications can arise from a hernia. This is can be caused by Hernia incarceration. This is when part of your intestine is trapped and blood supply is cut off. This can lead to a life threatening condition. If you think you have a hernia please seek immediate medical attention.
