If you bang your artificial nail against something, you may dislodge your real nail from the nail bed. Germs, yeast, or fungus can get into the gap and grow. A bacterial infection can turn your nails green.
How can you prevent GNS?
Pseudomonas bacteria are common and your hands and nails are always exposed. Always keep your hands and feet clean and dry.
If you exercise make sure you dry your feet and change your socks after a long period of exercise. Try to keep your fingers dry as much as possible. Make sure you wear shoes of the correct size to keep pressure off your toenails. Monitor toe and fingernail injuries, especially if you have a raised nail bed. A raised nail bed allows bacteria to enter and grow.
If you wear acrylic nails be as careful as possible to not bang your nails. The attached acrylic nail can move or raise your nail allowing bacteria to enter and grow.
Remember:
Green nails are unsightly, and the bacteria will continue to grow and spread. In rare cases, the bacteria may spread to other nails or even different parts of the body. Nail polish only covers up the problem and does not cure it. To rid yourself of green nails is with medical treatment.
